Do you remember that blog post where I mentioned different types of music being for different types of moods? Well this is the post where I’ll explain just what I meant.

Have you ever loved somebody so much it makes you cry? Have you ever needed something so bad you can’t sleep at night? Have you ever tried to find the words but they don’t…. Okay okay okay those are Brandy’s lyrics but seriously, have you ever been in your feelings about someone special? If your missing someone, try listening to love songs that remind you of that person. Those songs give you permission to pause and reminisce. Those slow jams put you in a comfortable place that’ll make you smile instead of sulk.

What about the complete opposite? What about those times when that someone special hurts you or makes you mad. Well that’s when you pull out the Jasmine Sullivan type of songs like “Bust Your Windows”. It might not mend your broken heart but by the time your done you may just end up laughing at your self and just enjoying letting that negative energy escape you as you sing at the top of your longs with a bat in your hand. Well… maybe you shouldn’t hold a bat but you get what I mean.

On a different note, sometimes you just need to focus. Whether you need to focus on spreadsheets, a documentary you have to watch or if editing a 20 page paper due for school, certain types of music can help with that. It’s been clinically proven that listening to classical music can enhance brain activity and act as a catalyst for improving health and well-being.

Then there are those moments when you just want to drown out all noise and only hear what ever will calm your nerves, stop all thoughts and fill you with nothing but peace and serenity. That music such as worship music (my personal favorite), smooth jazz, soft instrumentals and even lullabies (hence why babies enjoy them) is the type of music that can bring you down from a 10 to a 2 after just one song.

Music IS a source of therapy. Not only does the tone and sound guide your mood but also the lyrics. Have you ever heard a song and felt like the lyrics were written specifically for you, for where you are in that exact moment? That is the beauty of music. It feeds your soul and stimulates your mind in ways you never thought anything other than a human could.

What is your go-to music? If you never realized the effect that music has on your mood and how it can come to your rescue, give it a try! Let me know how music helped you through a situation that you were dealing with!

Melodically Yours,

Coach Sawny
